What is an island country without a vast variety of seafood? And like the various costal and island countries across the globe Sri Lanka is famous for its seafood dishes. One such dish known as the Fish Ambul Thiyal is of special mention. The dish is prepared typically with fish species like Halibut or Tuna. The fish is cut into cubes and is sautéed with a mix of spices like black pepper, cinnamon, garlic, curry leaves, turmeric and pandan leaves. But the main ingredient that gives the dish its distinctive sour taste is a small fruit called goraka which is dried and then cooked along with the fish with a small amount of water that results in a spicy and tangy fish curry best eaten with boiled rice. The dish is a Sri Lankan staple and is available across most restaurants in the city.
