Situated 1 km off the coast of Nilaveli, Pigeon Island National Park is famous for rock pigeons which is how the island derived its name. The island contains one of the best coral reefs in Sri Lanka. To get to the island, a boat has to be taken from the mainland. Usually, hotels also arrange boats to the island, or you can also find local boatsmen in the area. Swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling can be done in the island's beach. The island subsist of two islands. They are large and small pigeon island. In the colonial era, Pigeon Island was used as a shooting range. You can also go on a hike to see the rock pigeons by walking along the pigeon island rock.
