The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a sacred tree situated in Mahamewna Gardens. It is believed to be the right wing branch of the historical Sri Maha Bodhi in Buddha Gaya, India under which Lord Buddha attained enlightment.
The Bodhi plant was brought to Sri Lanka by Sangamitta Thera in the 3rd century BC. The Bodhi tree was planted by King Devanampiya Tissa. Ancient kings protected and preserved the sacred tree, and developed the religious site.
