The ancient kingdom dates back to three rulers who reigned in the kingdom of Polonnaruwa from time to time. King Vijayabahu, Parakramabahu, and Nissanka Malla ruled the kingdom during their reign. The history talks about Parakramabahu as the key contributor to Polonnaruwa. His reign brought success to the people of Polonnaruwa, due to the Agriculture and Trade that took place.
The irrigation systems developed during King Parakramabahu's reign brought water to the paddy cultivations and the surroundings. The resevoir is another marvel built by the King during his reign.
