Polonnaruwa Vatadage

The Vatadage is a an ancient spherical structure believed to be constructed by King Parakramabahu or King Nissanka Malla. The ancient Vatadage was built to enshrine the tooth relic of Lord Buddha.

The Vatadage was built with four entrances from four sides, and on each side the entrance was equipped with a Sandakadapahana (moon stone) on the floor, and with two Muragala (guard stone) beside.

Four Buddha statues were built on each entrance on the top platform. It is believed to be the ultimate development done during that period due to the meticulous carvings.
